Gym and training

Spend energy at the gym to raise strength, defense, speed and dexterity. Happy players train better, and better gyms give bigger gains.

Gym and training

The gym is where you build the battle stats that win (or lose) your Fights.

The four battle stats

You'll find the gym under Actions → Gym. Each session trains one stat:

  • Strength: you hit harder.
  • Defense: you take hits better.
  • Speed: you strike first and dodge more.
  • Dexterity: you land more of your hits.

Pick a stat, choose how many sessions to do (or press Max to use all your energy) and press Train. Each card shows roughly how much one session will add right now. Your stats are private: other players can't see them.

Energy and happiness

Every session costs energy, which refills over time, even while you're away. Each session also gives you 1 XP.

Happiness makes a big difference. The happier you are, the more each session gives you. Training costs a little happiness too (2 per session), so a long session slowly wears your mood down. Newer players lose less.

Gains also slow down as a stat grows: a high stat needs more work for each extra point. Every session varies a little, by up to ±10%.

Gyms and memberships

Vesper City has several gyms. The first one is free; the others open at higher levels and charge a one-off membership fee. A membership is yours for good.

Better gyms multiply every session's gains, and many have a speciality: extra gains on certain stats, or sessions that cost less energy. The list of gyms on the right shows each one's multiplier and speciality.

You own every membership you buy, but you train at one gym at a time. Joining a new gym makes it your active gym. To move to another gym you own, press Switch here; after a switch you must wait 3 days before switching again.

When a gym becomes your active one, you need a few sessions to settle in. For your first 5 sessions there you get only 50% of its speciality bonus.

Training in jail

In jail the Gym page becomes the jail gym. There's no membership, but not every stat can be trained in a cell block (there's nowhere to run). Strength gains are 10% better inside, which makes a stretch in jail a little less wasted. You can't train while in hospital.

Other ways to train better

  • The Harbour Works career gives better gym gains as a perk. See Jobs.
  • A gym room built in your home makes sessions cost less energy. See Properties and renting.

Tips

  • Keep your happiness high before a big training session.
  • Spread your training: low stats grow faster than high ones.
  • Choose a gym whose speciality matches the stat you train most, then stay there.
  • Attacking costs energy too: keep some back if you plan to fight soon.
