Jobs
Pick a career, work a shift every few hours for steady pay, climb the ranks for better perks, and earn Favours for the Workshop and top-rank powers.
A job gives you an honest wage (mostly honest) and a perk that helps everything else you do.
Choosing a career
Go to Actions → Jobs and pick one of Vesper City's employers. Each career has a ladder of ranks and its own perk:
- City Police: shorter jail time.
- St. Jude's Hospital: shorter hospital stays.
- The Golden Wheel: bigger crime payouts.
- Harbour Works: better gym gains.
- The Evening Star: better crime odds.
You can hold one job at a time. Switching to another career starts you again at its first rank.
Shifts and pay
Press Work a shift to earn your rank's pay in cash, plus job points and 2 XP. After a shift you wait 8 hours before the next one. The page shows a countdown, and the menu says "Shift ready" when you can work again.
Every shift also earns Favours: 1 for each rank you hold, so higher ranks earn more.
Promotions and perks
Each shift adds job points (1 a shift). When you have enough points and the level the next rank asks for, you're promoted on your next shift. The progress bar shows what the next rank needs and what it pays. Some ranks may also ask you to carry a particular rare item.
Higher ranks pay more and give a bigger perk. Your perk counts only while you hold the job.
From rank 4 the Workshop opens: you spend Favours and cash to make items only your career can make.
From rank 5 you get your career's power, a favour you can do for another player:
- City Police: release a prisoner from jail.
- St. Jude's Hospital: discharge a patient, patched up to at least 25% health.
- Harbour Works: cheaper, faster Bazaar deliveries for a player.
- The Evening Star: run a friendly story that lifts a player's Street Reputation by one tier for a while (the title on their profile, from Unknown up to Legend; not Respect points), or bury an unflattering story.
Powers cost Favours and can only be used a few times a day.
Show up or ship out
Your employer expects you at work. Each game day without a shift is an idle day. After 3 idle days in a row you start losing job points, which can cost you a rank, and at zero points you're fired. A fired player must wait 3 days before the same employer takes them back. You get a warning notice first.
Days in jail, in hospital or travelling don't count, and players below level 5 never lose points.
Going away? Book leave on the Jobs page: you have 14 days of leave in any 365 days. Working a shift ends your leave early.
Work in jail
In jail the only work is sewing mailbags: a small cash shift (hours between shifts: 1). See Jail and hospital.
Tips
- Pick the perk that fits how you play: crimes, fights or staying out of jail.
- Business Management raises your pay. See Education.
- Work one shift a day at least, or book leave before a break.
- Save Favours for the Workshop once you reach its rank.
