What to do first, and in what order: errands, a first course, steady crimes and training, a job, the bank and a gang.

Your first week in Vesper City

The city doesn't care where you start, only where you finish. Here is a friendly order of play for your first week, so your bars never sit full and your cash never sits in your pocket.

The first evening: follow the Don

Your first letters from the Don on the Front Page are the best teacher in the game. Each errand in the first set pays $170, with $300 more for finishing the set. Do them in order: they walk you through crimes, a shift, the gym, a trip and your first fight. See Getting started.

Before anything else, press Collect on the daily reward. It takes a second, and the streak is worth keeping (Daily rewards).

Your first crimes

Open Actions → Crimes and pick small jobs with a good chance and a mild "If it goes wrong" line. Spend your nerve every visit: a full bar can't refill, so unused nerve is wasted. Don't chase the biggest payout yet. Steady small wins give XP, cash and Respect, and they teach you which jobs suit your stats. More in Crimes.

Training and a first course

Spend your energy at the gym each visit (Gym and training). Early on, keep your happiness up and train the stat you like most; you can specialise later.

Then start your first course before you log off, because the clock runs while you are away. Street Smarts is the classic first choice: level 1, $1,000, 4 hours, and it improves every crime you commit. See Education.

A job, a shift a day

Pick a career under Actions → Jobs and work one shift whenever the timer allows (8 hours apart). It is steady pay, XP and a perk that lasts as long as you keep the job. See Jobs.

Days three to seven

  • Bank your cash. Once the teller will see you (level 8), put spare money in the bank before you log off. Cash in your pocket can be taken (Bank).
  • Look for a gang. From level 3 you can join one in your home district. A good gang is worth more than a good weapon (Gangs).
  • Plan the crime ladder. At level 5, Streetwise ($7,500) opens the next tier of crimes. From level 5 you can gather intel on jobs you plan to repeat.
  • Collect your daily reward every day and finish the Don's letters.

What to avoid

  • Don't blow your cash on gear before you know your playstyle.
  • Don't keep committing crimes while your heat is high: let it cool first.
  • Don't wait for a bar to refill in front of the screen. Spend it, log off, come back.

A good first week

You finish the Don's errands, you have one course behind you and another running, you hold a job, your money sleeps in the bank, and you know which gang you want. Everything else grows from there. Ready for the next step? Read Making money at every stage.
